Abstract
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the chronic diseases with high incidence and significant mortality rates. One of the main complications of COPD is ineffective airway clearance due to hypersecretion of sputum and chronic inflammation in the airways. Non-pharmacological therapy that can be used to reduce symptoms of ineffective airway clearance is the clapping technique and deep breathing. Objective: To analyze the nursing care outcomes for patients with COPD experiencing ineffective airway clearance at the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This paper uses a descriptive method with a case study approach. The case study instruments include a nursing care format, SOP for the clapping technique and deep breathing, and an observation sheet for symptoms of ineffective airway clearance. The subjects consisted of 3 patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The data was analyzed descriptively for nursing care. Results: Based on the analysis, it appears that the techniques of clapping and deep breathing are effective in improving airway clearance in all three patients. This is evidenced by the reduction or disappearance of wheezing and rhonchi sounds, as well as a decrease in HR and RR. Recommendation: A standard operating procedure (SOP) for the innovative action of clapping and deep breathing should be created for widespread use at the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital.
