Abstract

Background : Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by an increase in the body's blood glucose levels. Longterm use of oral antidiabetic drugs causes side effects and is quite expensive. The nut grass root plant is one of the natural ingredients that can be used as an alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus with minimal side effects. Objective: Determine the effectiveness a dose of the n-hexane fraction of teki grass tubers as an antidiabetic in streptozotocin-induced rats. Method : Experimental research on the n-hexane fraction of teki grass tubers was carried out on 24 male rats. Divided into 6 treatment groups, namely normal, negative, positive, dose fractions of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kgBW. Study used diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin 40 mg/kgBW intraperitoneally. Oral treatment for 21 days, sugar levels were measured every 7th, 14th and 21st day using a glucometer. Reduction in blood sugar levels was calculated using the % reduction formula, analyzed using SPSS. Result : Percent reduction value of 21% for the negative control, 66% for the positive control as well as doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kgBW, percent reduction value of 62%, 74% and 79% significantly reduced blood glucose levels of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Conclusion : N-hexane fraction of nut grass tubers at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kgBB has antidiabetic activity. Dose of 200 mg/kgBB the best effectiveness. Suggestion : Further research is needed regarding in vitro antidiabetic testing of the n-hexane fraction of teki grass tubers.
