Abstract
Background: Compliance is crucial to ensuring effective outcomes, especially in tuberculosis treatment. If patients are not compliant, the bacteria can reactivate after lying dormant in the body's tissues for several years. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an aerobic microorganism that requires oxygen for metabolism, which means it tends to thrive in oxygen-rich tissues. The apical sections of the lungs have higher pressure than other tissues, making this area particularly conducive to the growth of the tuberculosis bacteria. Objective: To determine the factors influencing medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center. Method: This quantitative descriptive study used a cross-sectional approach involving 38 tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center. The statistical test used was the Chi-Square test. Results: The study, which included 38 respondents, showed that age did not influence medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.419). Gender influenced medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.029). Education influenced medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.001). Occupation did not influence medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.273). Knowledge influenced medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.023). A supervisor's directly Observed Treatment (D.O.T.) influenced medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center (p-value = 0.014). Conclusion: Several factors, including gender, education, knowledge, and DOT supervision, affect medication compliance in tuberculosis patients at the Karangsambung Health Center. Recommendation: Future research should focus on further exploring factors influencing medication compliance in tuberculosis patients.
