Abstract

Background: Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in adults worldwide. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or ruptures, preventing parts of the brain from receiving the necessary blood supply carrying oxygen. This results in cell or tissue death. Objectives: This study aims to determine the characteristics of stroke patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in 2023. Method: This research is a retrospective, descriptive study. A total of 132 samples were analyzed, and data were collected from medical records for the 2023 period. Results: The total incidence of stroke during the 2023 period was 456 patients. The percentage of hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic strokes was higher among patients over 55 years old (80.30%). The majority of patients were female (56.82%), actively employed (72.73%), and had a nursing diagnosis of "risk of ineffective cerebral perfusion" (54.76%). Many had a history of Grade 3 hypertension (47.73%) and diabetes (58.02%). Hemorrhagic stroke was the most common type (65.91%), often associated with infarction (71.76%). Left hemiparesis was frequently observed (50.76%). Most patients did not have hypercholesterolemia (83.33%) and did not experience decreased consciousness (70.45%). Conclusion: The majority of stroke patients were over 55 years old (80.30%), female (56.82%), and actively employed (72.73%). Most had a diagnosis of "risk of ineffective cerebral perfusion" (54.76%), Grade 3 hypertension (47.73%), and diabetes (58.02%). Hemorrhagic strokes were most common (65.91%) and were frequently linked to infarctions (71.76%). Left hemiparesis was prevalent (50.76%). Previous stroke history, hypercholesterolemia, and decreased consciousness were not the main factors. Recommendation: This study can serve as baseline data for future researchers. It is recommended to use time and resources efficiently in subsequent studies.
