Abstract
Background: Preschool-aged children are individuals in a period of rapid development, particularly in the area of fine motor skills. The role of the family, especially parents, is crucial in providing appropriate stimulation. However, in reality, many families experience decreased coping abilities due to psychological stress, dual role burdens, and lack of information. This condition can hinder the caregiving process and lead to developmental delays in children. One effective method to enhance fine motor skills is puzzle play therapy, which can also increase emotional engagement between parents and children. Objective: This study aims to describe the implementation of family nursing care during the developmental stage of preschool-aged children with decreased family coping in Balingasal Village, Padureso District, and to evaluate the effectiveness of puzzle play therapy in improving children’s fine motor skills and family coping. Method: This research used a case study design with a family nursing care approach. The subjects consisted of three families with children aged 3–6 years experiencing delayed fine motor development and signs of decreased family coping. The intervention was carried out over seven sessions, including parent education and puzzle play therapy conducted for three consecutive days. Data were collected through interviews, observations, the KPSP (PreScreening Developmental Questionnaire), child development observation sheets, and family knowledge level questionnaires. Results: The results showed that after the puzzle play therapy intervention, the children's fine motor skills improved based on observational data, although the KPSP scores remained the same—two children scored 7, and one child scored 8. Parents showed improved understanding after the educational sessions, with questionnaire results falling into the "good" category, along with improved coping strategies and increased involvement in child stimulation activities. Recommendation: Families are advised to continue puzzle play therapy independently at home as a means of stimulating their child’s development, particularly in fine motor skills. This activity can also strengthen parental involvement, enhance family coping, and create a more supportive environment for preschool-aged child caregiving.
