Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood to adulthood, typically ranging from 10–19 years of age, and is a stage prone to engaging in negative behaviors, including self-harm. Self-harm is a form of self-injurious behavior that is not intended as a suicide attempt. Objective: To explore in greater depth the phenomenological factors that prevent the urge for self-harm among teenagers at SMAN 1 Karanganyar. Methods: This study used qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected using the snowball sampling technique, resulting in six participants. Each interview lasted 10–15 minutes per participant and was conducted through in-depth interviews. Instruments used included interview guidelines, observation sheets, and recording devices. Results: Based on the research conducted, four themes were identified: 1) Youth knowledge and perception of self-harm, consisting of two sub-themes: knowledge and perception; 2) Motivation and attitude toward self-harm in adolescents, consisting of two sub-themes: motivation for self-harm behavior and attitudes toward self-harm; 3) Experiences and prevention factors for self-harm urges, consisting of two sub-themes: previous experiences and prevention factors for self-harm urges; 4) Coping strategies for the prevention of self-harm behavior, consisting of one sub-theme: strategies for coping with and preventing self-harm urges. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, four themes were identified as factors preventing the urge to engage in self-harm behavior: adolescents' knowledge and perception of self-harm, their motivation and attitude toward self-harm, their experiences and factors that prevent self-harm impulses, and coping strategies to manage and prevent self-harm impulses. Recommendations: Future researchers are encouraged to further explore and update knowledge on the phenomenon of preventing self-harm behavior in teenagers, particularly among high school students.
