Abstract

Background: Asthma is a non-communicable respiratory disease in which there is inflammation of the respiratory tract due to accumulation of secretions or spasms in the bronchi due to allergic reactions. Symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, and coughing. Ineffective airway clearance in asthma occurs due to narrowing of the airways and accumulation of secretions due to allergen reactions. ACBT (Active Cycle Of Breathing Technique) is a type of active breathing exercise that regulates breathing to produce a stable breathing pattern with a regular rhythm, a breathing pattern that keeps the respiratory muscles functioning and encourages the release of phlegm to clear the respiratory tract. Objective: To obtain an overview of nursing care and the level of effectiveness of implementing ACBT in asthma patients with a nursing diagnosis of ineffective airway clearance. Method: The study used a descriptive analysis method. This case study was conducted during 3 meetings with 3 respondents. Result: After being given ACBT training for 3 meetings, the results showed a decrease in respiratory frequency from the first to the third meeting with an average of 5x/minute for each respondent. There was an increase in oxygen saturation from the first to the third day with an average increase of 2% for each respondent. The breath sound that was initially wheezing became vesicular. Recommendation: Active breathing exercises with ACBT are easy to do independently because there are no negative impacts that are effectively caused in overcoming shortness of breath.
