Abstract

Background: Ineffective airway clearance often happens in children with acute respiratory infection (ARI) because of mucus that blocks breathing. Using a nebulizer is effective but not always affordable. Hot water vapor inhalation therapy with eucalyptus oil aromatherapy is a simple alternative that can help reduce symptoms and improve breathing, especially in areas with limited access to health services. Objective: To find out the effectiveness of hot water steam inhalation therapy and eucalyptus oil aromatherapy in solving the problem of ineffective airway clearance in children with acute respiratory infection (ARI). Method: This research used a descriptive case study design with three children aged 6–9 years who had acute respiratory infection (ARI) in Kemranjen 1 Community Health Center . The therapy was given twice a day for four days, followed by an evaluation of respiratory rate, additional breath sounds, and chest retractions. Results: All three children showed that acute respiratory infection (ARI) symptoms such as productive cough, shortness of breath, and rhonchi during assessment. The nursing diagnosis was ineffective airway clearance. The intervention focused on airway management using hot water steaminhalation therapy and eucalyptus oil aromatherapy. The therapy was done for 4 days, twice a day. Evaluation showed that the average respiratory rate decreased from 34 breaths per minute to 22 breaths per minute, rhonchi disappeared, and chest retractions were no longer found. Recommendation: This therapy can be used as a complementary alternative therapy that can be applied by health workers and the community to treat mild to moderate acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children.
