Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible disease with a global prevalence of about 10%. CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis must restrict fluid intake to prevent complications such as edema, hypertension, and heart failure. Fluid restriction often causes complaints of thirst and dry mouth (xerostomia), which may interfere with comfort and adherence to therapy. One non-pharmacological nursing intervention that can be used to overcome these complaints is Ice Cube Therapy, which involves sucking on ice cubes to provide a cooling sensation and maintain oral cavity moisture. Objective: To describe nursing care for CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis through the implementation of Ice Cube Therapy at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong. Method: This scientific paper employed a descriptive case study method involving three CKD patients with moderate to severe thirst, assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after the intervention. Results: Following the implementation of Ice Cube Therapy over three hemodialysis sessions, patients experienced a decrease in thirst intensity from severe to moderate and mild levels. Conclusion: Ice Cube Therapy is effective in reducing thirst and improving patients’ adherence to fluid restriction.
