Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes narrowing of the airways, resulting in symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. Ineffective airway clearance is one of the main problems experienced by asthma patients due to mucus hypersecretion and bronchospasm. The Buteyko technique is a non-pharmacological intervention that can help improve the effectiveness of airway clearance, but it has not been widely implemented in healthcare facilities, including the Emergency Room at Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Hospital. Objective: To describe ineffective airway clearance of nursing care for asthma patients in the Emergency Room (IGD) of Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Regional Hospital. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study method with a nursing care approach. The subjects were three asthma patients experiencing ineffective airway clearance problems in the Emergency Department of Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Regional Hospital. Data were collected through nursing assessment, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, as well as observation of vital signs and respiratory effectiveness before and after the Buteyko intervention. Results: After the application of the Buteyko technique, there was a significant clinical improvement in the form of a decrease in respiratory rate (from 26-30x/minute to 20-24x/minute), an increase in oxygen saturation (from 86%-90% to 96%-98%), and a reduction in symptoms such as ineffective cough, rhonchi, and wheezing. Conclusion: Ineffective airway clearance nursing care applied to asthma patients in the Emergency Department of Hj. Anna Lasmanah Banjarnegara Hospital shows that the Buteyko technique can improve patient respiratory function. Therefore, this technique can be part of standard nursing interventions in the management of acute asthma. Recommendation: Further education is needed for healthcare workers and patients regarding the benefits and techniques of Buteyko application, as well as further research with a larger sample size to strengthen these findings.
