Abstract
Background: High exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays in tropical countries such as Indonesia can trigger skin damage caused by free radicals. The use of sunscreen is one preventive measure. Arumanis mango leaves and white turmeric contain flavonoids and antioxidants with potential as natural active ingredients for sunscreen. Objective: To determine the potential of a 70% ethanol extract combination of arumanis mango leaves and white turmeric as an in vitro sunscreen based on SPF, %Te, and %Tp values. Methods: The extracts of arumanis mango leaves and white turmeric were obtained through maceration, followed by total flavonoid content analysis and in vitro sunscreen activity testing using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Sunscreen protection categories were determined based on Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards, and the data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA in IBM SPSS 25. Results: The 50%:50% combination of arumanis mango leaf and white turmeric extracts showed the highest total flavonoid content and SPF value (categorized as ultra-protection), along with %Te and %Tp values classified in the sunblock category. One-way ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) among the three extract combinations (35%:65%, 50%:50%, and 65%:35%). Conclusion: The combination of arumanis mango leaves and white turmeric has potential as a natural ingredient in sunscreen formulation with ultra-protection category. Suggestion: Future researchers are encouraged to formulate and evaluate the physical quality of sunscreen preparations using the combined extract of arumanis mango leaves and white turmeric.
