Abstract
Background: Exposure to free radicals from pollution, cigarette smoke, and metabolism can trigger oxidative stress, which has negative effects on health, including the risk of degenerative diseases. Antioxidants are needed to neutralize the effects of free radicals. Purple sweet potato (Ipomoea Batatas L. Poir) is a plant that contains active compounds such as flavonoids and phenols that function as natural antioxidants. Objective: Determine the antioxidant activity of purple sweet potato ethanol extract using the β-carotene linoleic acid method and determine the IC50 value of the extract. Methods: The research began with the maceration method using a 96% ethanol solvent. The active compounds in the extract are identified through phytochemical tests. The antioxidant activity test was carried out using the β-carotene linoleic acid method. Results: The yield of purple sweet potato ethanol extract was 15.03%. The extract contains phenol and flavonoid compounds. The result of the antioxidant test with an IC50 value was 52.08 μg/mL, which is categorized as a strong antioxidant. Conclusion: Purple sweet potato ethanol extract has strong antioxidant activity and has the potential to be a natural source of antioxidants. Suggestions: Further research needs to be carried out to develop the extract into a form of antioxidant preparation so that it can be easier to use. Recommendation: It is recommended that further research develop the use of purple sweet potato extract into the form of functional preparations, both as an active ingredient in health products and cosmetics that are antioxidants
