Abstract

The use of jamu as a traditional medicine remains a primary choice for the Indonesian population, including in the Banyumas region. However, the widespread distribution of jamu containing Chemical Drug Substances (BKO) poses a serious health threat. This study aims to examine the role of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Banyumas in the withdrawal of jamu containing BKO, identify the challenges faced, and evaluate the effectiveness of its implementation. The method used is descriptive qualitative with informant from BPOM. The research findings indicate that the effectiveness of product supervision and withdrawal is still suboptimal, as shown by field findings in 2024 in the Cilacap area, Under the jurisdiction of BPOM Banyumas, namely the discovery of more than 2000 boxes of jamu with counterfeit distribution permits (April 30, 2024) and turmeric jamu containing substances with ecstasy-like effects (Desember 31, 2024). Limited personnel, budget constraints, low inspection frequency, as well as low compliance of business actors and public awarness, are the main inhibiting factors. Although the withdrawal procedures have been carried out in accordance with regulations, the lack of follow-up supervision makes it difficult to suppress the circulation of BKO. It is recommended to strengthen the capacity of local BPOM, increase education for producers and consumers, utilize monitoring technology, and eforce strict legal measures to ensure the safety of jamu in the market.
