Abstract

Background, Traditional medicines are still widely used by the community as they are considered safer and more affordable. However, in reality, several traditional medicine products have been found to contain pharmaceutical chemicals (PCs) that can cause serious side effects. This condition highlights the crucial role of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (Balai POM) in ensuring that traditional medicines distributed to the public meet safety and quality standards. Purpose, This study aims to determine the role of Balai POM in supervising traditional medicines containing pharmaceutical chemicals in Banyumas Regency, as well as to identify the forms of legal protection provided to the public. Method, This research employed both qualitative and quantitative methods with a descriptive approach. Primary data were collected through interviews with officers from Balai POM Banyumas, while secondary data were obtained from literature, journals, and official BPOM documents. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively by describing the forms of supervision and the role of Balai POM in enforcing legal protection. Result, Balai POM Banyumas conducts supervision in two stages: pre-market and post-market. Pre-market supervision includes facility inspections and evaluation of distribution permits, while post-market supervision involves sampling, laboratory testing, and enforcement actions against products proven to contain pharmaceutical chemicals. Legal protection is provided in two forms: preventive measures through education and public awareness programs, and repressive measures through sanctions against business actors who violate regulations. Conclusion, Balai POM plays an essential role in ensuring the quality and safety of traditional medicines in Banyumas Regency through a systematic and continuous supervision process. The supervision and legal enforcement efforts have effectively reduced the circulation of traditional medicines containing pharmaceutical chemicals and provided protection to the public from potential health risks.
