Abstract

Background: Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease and leading cause of death in Indonesia, the number of stroke patients in productive age continues to increase. Data shows that Non Hemorrhagic Stroke (SNH) cases occupy the top three positions of the top ten diseases at KRT Setjonegoro Wonosobo Hospital. Hopelessness is a major psychological response in SNH patients that affects the ability to adapt positively. Objective: To analyze the nursing care of SNH patients with hopelessness problems in the Bougenville Ward of KRT Setjonegoro Hospital. Methods: This study used a case study approach method with a total of 5 SNH patients who were given generalist therapy to overcome hopelessness including identifying the abilities, the understanding of the disease process and the impact of situations, providing motivation for realistic expectations, activating family members, and teaching deep breath relaxation therapy and positive affirmation techniques in 5 meetings for 10 minutes for each action. The questionnaire used is the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), nursing care format, observation sheet for signs of hopelessness symptoms, ability sheet for deep breath relaxation therapy and positive affirmations. Nursing care results: The most decrease BHS score was experienced in Patient 3 with 20 score (severe) in the first meet to 8 (mild) or 60% in precentage. The average of improvement in ability to perform deep breath relaxation therapy and positive affirmations was 70% of the five patients. The average of decreased signs and symptoms of hopelessness from the five patients showed 52%, with the most decreased was in Patients 3, 4, and 5 by 60% each patients. Recommendation: The results of this case study are recommended for hospitals to conduct training and implement generalist therapy to reduce hopelessness in SNH patients.
