Abstract

Backgraund: Chronic Kidney Failure is a condition where the kidneys are permanently damaged and cannot recover. Based on WHO data, about 1 in 10 people in the world are estimated to suffer from chronic kidney disease, Chronic kidney failure patients, fluid restrictions are often carried out, This can trigger thirst. How to reduce this problem using the method of chewing xylitol gum. Objective: To find out whether there is a decrease in thirst before hemodialysis and after hemodialysis after chewing xylitol gum. Method: This type of research is Quasi Experiment pre-test and post-test with two group design method without control group, This research instrument uses VAS (Visual analog scale). The respondents of the study were 78 people divided into 2 groups. Data were processed with SPSS-23 and analyzed using T test. Results: The results of the study showed a decrease in thirst before and after the intervention. The results of the independent T-test showed a 2-tailed sig of 0.00 <0.05, it was concluded that there was an effect of chewing xylitol gum on hemodialysis patients. Conclusion: Chewing xylitol gum can reduce thirst levels in hemodialysis patients. Recommendatition: Further researchers can develop the study with more methods of reducing thirst used, and add more research respondents so that more people know the benefits of the intervention.
