Abstract

Background: Elderly is the last phase of a person's life from the human development phase. Several health problems that arise in elderly, one of which is dementia. Dementia occurs due to neuropathological and biochemical changes that can disrupt communication between neurons and result in neuron death. The large number of neuron deaths results in reduced production of acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter involved in the memory process. One way to manage memory disorders in dementia patients is by implementing a picture matching memory game. Objective: To explain nursing care for providing memory game therapy (picture matching game) in the elderly with dementia in Sitiadi Village, Puring District, Kebumen Regency. Methods: This scientific paper uses a descriptive research type in the form of a case study. The number of subjects taken is 5 elderly. The instruments used were geriatric nursing care format, nursing kit, memory game SOP, Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) instrument, and cognitive function observation sheet. The action taken by a picture matching memory game for 3 weeks. Results: The nursing problem in this scientific work is memory disorders. The intervention used was memory training with a picture matching memory game. Implementation was carried out for 3 weeks with a frequency of 3 meetings a week with a maximum duration of 30 minutes. The evaluation results are the five clients showed a significant increase in cognitive function with an average MMSE score of 16.6 to 23. Recommendation: The results of the innovation of providing picture matching memory game therapy have proven effective in improving cognitive function in dementia patients.
