Abstract
Background: Family members of patients in the ICUoften experience high levels of anxiety due to the psychological pressure of critical situations. This anxiety can influence their coping mechanisms, either adaptive or maladaptive. Maladaptive coping, such as denial or avoidance, may increase stress, while adaptive coping, such as problem-solving and seeking social support, helps reduce anxiety. This study aims to understand the relationship between anxiety levels and coping mechanisms among family members in the ICU. Objective: To determine the relationship between anxiety levels and coping mechanisms among family members of patients in the ICU at Dr. Soedirman Hospital, Kebumen. The findings have significant implications for developing holistic care strategies in the ICU. Method: This study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 56 family members of patients admitted to the ICUat Dr. SoedirmanHospital, Kebumen. The research instruments included the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) questionnaire to measure anxiety and a coping mechanism questionnaire. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with Spearman’s correlation test applied for analysis. Results: Most family members experienced moderate anxiety levels (76.8%), and the majority utilized maladaptive coping mechanisms (53.6%). A significant negative relationship was found between anxiety levels and coping mechanisms, with ρ = -0.370 and p = 0.005. This indicates that higher anxiety levels are associated with lower use of adaptive coping mechanisms. Conclusion: Anxiety levels are negatively related to coping mechanisms among family members of patients in the ICU at Dr. Soedirman Hospital, Kebumen. Higher anxiety levels lead to more frequent use of maladaptive coping strategies. Recommendation: Programs focusing on psychological support, therapeutic communication, and spiritual approaches should be developed for family members in the ICU. These interventions can help reduce anxiety and promote adaptive coping mechanisms.
