Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic condition characterized by symptoms such as shortness of breath, persistent coughing, and excessive sputum production. These symptoms are progressive and significantly affect patients' daily activities and overall quality of life. Continued smoking behavior among COPD patients is theoretically associated with a further decline in their quality of life. Objective: To determine the relationship between smoking behavior and the quality of life in COPD patients at RSUD Prembun Kebumen. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 100 respondents selected using a non-probability sampling technique. The study was conducted at the Pulmonary Clinic of RSUD Prembun during March–April 2025. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between smoking behavior and the quality of life of COPD patients, with a p-value < 0.001 and a correlation coefficient r = 0.589. This indicates a moderately strong relationship between smoking behavior and the quality of life among COPD patients. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between smoking behavior and the quality of life of COPD patients at RSUD Prembun Kebumen. Recommendation: Considering that smoking behavior among COPD patients is poor and their quality of life is still in the moderate category, nurses are expected to provide education regarding the dangers of smoking, especially for patients already diagnosed with COPD. Counseling should also be provided to help reduce smoking behavior and improve patients' quality of life.
