Abstract
Background: Orthopedic surgery, particularly Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF), is commonly performed to manage fractures by realigning the fractured bone and securing it with internal fixation. One of the major postoperative issues following ORIF is pain. Non-pharmacological pain management, such as the application of cold packs, has been shown to be beneficial in reducing pain, inflammation, and swelling associated with fractures. Objective: To provide appropriate nursing care for postoperative patients undergoing ORIF by reducing their pain intensity through non-pharmacological interventions. Methods: This study employed a case study design with a sample of five patients. The instruments used were an assessment sheet and an observation sheet for measuring pain levels using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Results: Analysis of observations before and after the cold pack intervention, administered for 10–15 minutes over five consecutive days, demonstrated a reduction of one level in pain intensity among the five patients who initially reported moderate pain. Recommendation: Cold pack therapy is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for managing postoperative pain in ORIF patients, as evidenced by the observed reduction in pain levels.
