Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus(DM)isachronicdiseaseinfluencedbylifestylefactors, especially theconsumptionofunhealthyfoodsandbeverages.KnowledgeaboutDM plays animportantroleinshapingpreventivebehaviors,especiallyamongadolescents who arevulnerabletoadoptingriskyhabits.Unfortunately,thelevelofDMknowledge among twelfth-gradestudentsatMANPurworejoisstilllow,withthemajorityfalling into the"sufficient"category(76.3%)andonly8.6%classifiedashaving"good" knowledge. Objective: To determinetherelationshipbetweenlevelofknowledgeaboutdiabetes mellitus (DM)andtheconsumptionbehavioroffoodsandbeveragesthatposeariskfor DM amongtwelfth-gradestudentsatMANPurworejo. Method: This studyusedacorrelationaldesignwithaquantitativeapproach.Thesample consisted of93twelfth-gradestudents.TheresearchinstrumentsincludedtheDKQ-24 questionnaire toassessknowledgeandanadaptedfoodconsumptionquestionnaire.Data were analyzedusingtheSpearmanstatisticaltest. Results: Most studentshada"sufficient"levelofknowledge(76.3%),withonly8.6% categorized as"good."Therewasasignificantnegativecorrelationbetweenknowledge level andriskyconsumptionbehaviorrelatedtoDM(r=-0.346;p=0.001),indicating that higherknowledgeisassociatedwithlowerengagementinunhealthyeatinghabits. Conclusion: There isasignificantrelationshipbetweenknowledgelevelandfood consumption behaviorsthatposeariskforDMamongtwelfth-gradestudentsatMAN Purworejo. Recommendation: A school-basedhealtheducationprogramisneededtoimprovestudents' knowledge andencouragehealthierlifestylebehaviorsasanearlypreventivemeasure against DM.
