Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common non-communicable disease among the elderly and is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and even death. According to data from the Yogyakarta Health Office, Sleman Regency has the highest prevalence of hypertension in the region. However, the level of knowledge about hypertension among the elderly in Sumber Hamlet, Balecatur Village, is not yet clearly known. Objective:To determine the level of knowledge about hypertension among the elderly at the Elderly Posyandu in Sumber Hamlet, Balecatur Village, Sleman Regency. Method:This research used a quantitative descriptive method with a survey approach. The sample consisted of 47 elderly people with hypertension selected using purposive sampling. Data collection used a questionnaire containing 25 items. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis and presented in frequency distribution tables. Conclusion:The majority of the elderly at the Elderly Posyandu in Sumber Hamlet had a good level of knowledge about hypertension. However, some respondents had only sufficient or poor knowledge, which requires further attention. Recommendation: Health workers and posyandu cadres are expected to increase the frequency of health education about hypertension regularly. The elderly are also encouraged to participate more actively in posyandu activities
