Abstract

Background: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women remains a significant nutritional issue that affects both maternal and fetal health, increasing the risk of anemia, pregnancy complications, and low birth weight (LBW). One of the main contributing factors to CED is an imbalance between nutritional intake and energy expenditure caused by improper dietary patterns and inappropriate levels of physical activity. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and physical activity with the incidence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women at Petanahan of Public Health Center. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 76 pregnant women were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary patterns, the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) to measure physical activity, and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) measurements to determine CED status. Data were analyzed using the Chi Square Test. Results: The majority of respondents had normal MUAC (65.8%), good dietary patterns (50%), and moderate physical activity levels (39.5%). The analysis revealed a significant relationship between dietary patterns and CED (p = 0.04) and a significant relationship between physical activity and CED (p = 0.02). Pregnant women with poor dietary patterns and imbalanced physical activity were more likely to experience CED than those with balanced diet and appropriate activity levels. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between dietary patterns and physical activity with the incidence of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women at Petanahan Public Health Center. Recommendations: Future studies are suggested to examine other influencing factors such as socioeconomic status and nutritional knowledge using a longitudinal study design.
