Abstract

Background: Hypertension is characterized by abnormally high arterial blood pressure (systolic > 140 mmHg and diastolic > 90 mmHg). It is a vascular condition that disrupts the transport of oxygen and nutrients. Headaches are a common symptom expressed by individuals with hypertension. Slow deep breathing is a technique that involves long exhalation phases with a respiratory rate of 10 breaths per minute or less. This therapy is highly effective, has no adverse side effects, and can reduce blood pressure, relax the body, and alleviate symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, and pain. Objective: To analyse nursing care for hypertension patients with acute pain by applying the slow deep breathing technique in the Mawar room of Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital, Purwokerto. Method: This case study uses a descriptive method, applying the slow deep breathing technique as an intervention for hypertension patients experiencing acute pain. Result: Acute pain was the nursing diagnosis identified in five patients with hypertension. The treatments included prescribed medication therapy and non-pharmacological methods such as slow deep breathing, performed in three cycles over three days for 10-15 minutes each session. Pain levels in all five patients decreased from moderate (6-5) to mild (3-2) after the intervention. Recommendations: The results of this case study suggest that slow deep breathing can effectively reduce pain levels in patients, offering a valuable non-pharmacological approach to pain management.
