Abstract

Background: Febrile seizures in children, often occurring when body temperature exceeds 38°C, can result in brain damage, epilepsy, and mental retardation. In Indonesia, the prevalence is 15%, with 18% in Central Java and 20% in Kebumen. Proper management, such as tepid sponge therapy, is crucial to reduce the risk of serious complications. Objective: This study aims to analyze nursing care for children with febrile seizures and hyperthermia at RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto. Methods: This descriptive study employs a case study approach. The subjects were five pediatric patients with febrile seizures and hyperthermia. The instruments used included nursing care formats, a Nursing Kit, and SOP for tepid sponge innovation. Data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively, presented in tables and narratives. Results: The assessment of all five patients revealed a common primary complaint of simple febrile seizures. The nursing diagnosis for all patients was hyperthermia related to disease processes. Interventions performed to address hyperthermia included hyperthermia management. Implementation involved identifying and managing body temperature due to thermoregulation dysfunction. Observations included monitoring body temperature, electrolyte levels, urine output, complications due to hyperthermia, and tepid sponge therapy. The evaluation results showed a decrease in hyperthermia symptoms, such as reduced body temperature and absence of fever. Tepid sponge therapy effectively alleviated hyperthermia symptoms. Conclusion: Managing febrile seizures with hyperthermia through tepid sponge intervention is effective in lowering body temperature and reducing hyperthermia symptoms in children. Recommendations: It is recommended to use tepid sponge therapy as a primary method for managing hyperthermia in children with febrile seizures, along with regular evaluations of the intervention's effectiveness.
