Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a chronic respiratory disorder characterized by progressive airflow limitation due to airway inflammation, leading to shortness of breath, decreased activity tolerance, and reduced quality of life. Objective: To analyze nursing care in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease through the application of Pursed Lips Breathing therapy in reducing dyspnea, improving breathing patterns, increasing oxygen saturation, and enhancing patients’ quality of life. Methods: This scientific paper used a descriptive method with a case study approach involving 5 COPD patients in Barokah Ward at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and physical examinations using observation sheets and Standard Operating Procedures. The intervention was carried out in 3 sessions per day for three days, with a duration of 10–15 minutes per session. Results: The main nursing problem identified was ineffective breathing pattern. After the implementation of Pursed Lips Breathing therapy, there was an improvement in respiratory condition, indicated by an increase in oxygen saturation from 92–93% to 100% and a decrease in respiratory rate from 25–27 breaths/minute to 18–19 breaths/minute. Breathing patterns became more regular, the use of accessory muscles decreased, and patient comfort improved. Recommendation: The innovation results indicate that Pursed Lips Breathing therapy is effective as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention in COPD patients and is recommended to be applied routinely, accompanied by continuous education for patients and families to improve therapy effectiveness and prevent recurrence.
