Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a persistent increase in blood pressure that can lead to complications such as heart disease and stroke. Some patients experience headaches that can worsen their condition due to stress responses. Therefore, nonpharmacological interventions such as deep breathing relaxation and warm compresses are needed in the nursing care of hypertensive patients with acute pain in the emergency department. Objective: Analyzing nursing care for hypertensive patients with acute pain at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Regional General Hospital. Methods: A descriptive study using a case study approach on five hypertensive patients with acute pain in the emergency room of Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Regional General Hospital (September–October 2025). The intervention consisted of deep breathing relaxation and warm compresses for 3×24 hours. Pain intensity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the intervention. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively. Result: The results of a case study of five patients with hypertension and acute pain showed that all respondents experienced a decrease in pain intensity after being given deep breathing relaxation and warm compresses for 3×24 hours. The initial pain scale was in the range of 5–6 (moderate pain) and after the intervention decreased to 3–4 (mild pain). In addition to a quantitative decrease in pain scale, patients subjectively reported a reduction in headache and neck tension. Objectively, patients appeared more relaxed, had calmer facial expressions, and showed a tendency toward improved blood pressure. Although all patients experienced a reduction in pain, the extent of the reduction varied among respondents. Recommendation: Further research should use a more robust design with a larger sample size and a longer intervention period to achieve more optimal and generalizable results.
