Abstract

Background: Accidents and emergency conditions remain major causes of preventable mortality when timely and appropriate first aid is not provided. Basic Life Support (BLS) plays a critical role in maintaining victims’ vital functions before professional medical assistance arrives. Therefore, adequate knowledge and skills in BLS are essential for adolescents, particularly members of the Youth Red Cross, who hold a strategic position in delivering first aid within the school environment. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the level of knowledge regarding Basic Life Support and first aid practices among Youth Red Cross students at SMK Negeri 1 Karanganyar. Methods: A quantitative correlational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. The sample consisted of 61 respondents who were active members of the Youth Red Cross, selected using total sampling. Data were collected using a structured, close-ended questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Results: The majority of respondents demonstrated a good level of knowledge (65.6%) and good first aid practices (62.3%). Spearman’s rho correlation analysis revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.868 with a p-value < 0.001, indicating a very strong and statistically significant relationship between knowledge of Basic Life Support and first aid practices. Conclusion: The findings indicate a significant relationship between students’ knowledge of Basic Life Support and their ability to perform first aid at SMK Negeri 1 Karanganyar. Higher levels of knowledge were associated with better first aid performance. Recommendation: Schools and healthcare professionals are encouraged to strengthen regular training and educational programs on Basic Life Support to enhance students’ preparedness and responsiveness in emergency situations
