Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and the potential for serious long-term complications. Physical activity plays a key role in maintaining glycemic control; however, low levels of participation often make optimal blood glucose management difficult to achieve. This study was conducted among participants of the Prolanis program at the Puring Primary Health Center to emphasize the importance of physical activity in diabetes management. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity and blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus enrolled in the Prolanis program at the Puring Primary Health Center. Methods: A quantitative correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. The sample consisted of 52 active Prolanis participants selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) to assess physical activity levels, and random blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer. Data analysis was performed using Spearman’s rho correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents had low levels of physical activity (51.9%) and hyperglycemic blood glucose levels (53.8%). Spearman’s rho analysis revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.770 with a p-value < 0.001, indicating a very strong and statistically significant relationship between physical activity and blood glucose levels. Conclusion: Low levels of physical activity are associated with higher blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Regular physical activity contributes to better glycemic control and improved quality of life among individuals with diabetes. Recommendation: Healthcare providers are encouraged to strengthen education and provide ongoing support to promote regular physical activity among patients with diabetes. Future studies are recommended to include additional variables, such as dietary patterns and stress, to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of factors influencing glycemic control.
