Abstract
Background : Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that often causes complaints of headaches due to increased blood pressure. Pain management is not only carried out through pharmacological therapy but can also be supported by non-pharmacological therapies such as Benson relaxation. This study aimed to describe nursing care with the application of the Benson relaxation technique to reduce pain levels in hypertensive patients in the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Objective : To analyze nursing care for hypertensive patients with acute pain problems at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods : This study used a descriptive design with a case study approach involving five hypertensive patients with acute pain in the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in February 2026. The intervention consisted of Benson relaxation therapy administered for 1×6 hours. Pain intensity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the intervention. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzed descriptively. Results : The results of the case study involving five hypertensive patients with acute pain showed that all respondents experienced a decrease in pain intensity after receiving the Benson relaxation intervention for 1×6 hours. The initial pain scale ranged from 6–7 (moderate pain) and decreased to 3–4 (mild pain) after the intervention. In addition to the quantitative decrease in pain scale, patients subjectively reported reduced headaches. Objectively, patients appeared more relaxed, facial expressions were calmer, and blood pressure showed a tendency to improve. Although all patients experienced a reduction in pain, the degree of pain reduction varied among respondents. Recommendation : Future research is recommended to use a stronger research design with a larger sample size and longer intervention duration to obtain more optimal results and allow broader generalization.
