Abstract

Background: Laparotomy is an abdominal surgical procedure with a high incidence rate. Post-laparotomy patients generally experience acute pain due to tissue damage, which affects both physiological and psychological conditions. Pain management can be carried out pharmacologically or non-pharmacologically, such as deep breathing relaxation and music therapy, which are effective through relaxation and distraction effects. Objective: Explaining nursing care in reducing pain in post-laparotomy patients through the application of deep breathing relaxation and music therapy. Methods: Descriptive design with a case study approach using the nursing process. The subjects were post-laparotomy patients according to the inclusion criteria. Interventions included deep breathing relaxation and music therapy. The study was conducted at RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto in October–November 2025, with data collected through interviews, observations, medical records, and pain measurement using the numerical scale. Result: Most of the patients were female, aged 21–60 years, with varying levels of education. All patients experienced acute pain at a moderate level (4–6). After being given deep breathing relaxation interventions and music therapy, there was a decrease in pain intensity by 2–3 points. This intervention was effective in helping to reduce pain through relaxation effects, distraction, and increased patient comfort. Conclusion: Deep breathing relaxation and music therapy are effective in reducing pain in post-laparotomy patients Recommendation: This intervention can be used as an alternative for non-pharmacological pain management as well as a reference for the development of SOP and patient education.
