Abstract

Background The incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing in Indonesia. Shortness of breath in COPD patients occurs due to dynamic hyperinflation which worsens with an increase in respiratory rate. One of the nonpharmacological treatments for COPD is rehabilitation exercises including balloon blowing. General Objective To explain nursing care for ineffective airway clearance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital Method This case study uses a descriptive method involving 5 patients who experienced respiratory disorders in COPD patients. The data obtained using observation sheets, then the action taken was rehabilitation exercises with balloon blowing. The main nursing diagnosis results that appeared in the five COPD patients were ineffective airway clearance, implementation was carried out according to nursing interventions, namely chest physiotherapy therapy, the results obtained were that the patient experienced changes, namely a decrease in RR, no additional wet rhonchi sounds, and reduced sputum production. Recommendations nurses are expected to apply balloon blowing therapy to handle nursing problems of ineffective airway clearance in COPD patients.
