Abstract

Background: Adolescents are vulnerable to smoking behavior due to environmental influences. Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2023) show that the prevalence of smokers aged 10–18 years is 7.4%, and in Central Java it reaches 19.72%. Ineffective family coping and lack of communication can worsen this habit. Objective: To analyze and evaluate family nursing care at the adolescent developmental stage with a nursing diagnosis of ineffective family coping in Kali Tengah Village. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study design involving five families with adolescent smokers. The nursing care process included assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The main intervention was education about the dangers of smoking using counseling sessions and leaflets. Knowledge levels were measured using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Results: Adolescents aged 13–14 years were found to engage in smoking behavior influenced by peers, curiosity, and lack of parental supervision. The nursing diagnosis identified was ineffective family coping. The results showed an increase in knowledge from 70 to 98.8, along with improvements in family communication and supervision. However, behavioral change was not yet optimal and required further intervention. Conclusion: Health education on the dangers of smoking is effective in improving knowledge and family coping among families with adolescents. However, continuous support is needed to achieve optimal behavioral change. Recommendation: Adolescents are expected to avoid smoking and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Families are encouraged to improve open communication, supervision, and consistent support as part of adaptive family coping.
