Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disorder characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible and is progressive in nature. One of the common nursing problems in COPD patients is ineffective airway clearance due to the accumulation of secretions. This condition can lead to impaired gas exchange, increased work of breathing, and decreased quality of life. A non-pharmacological management that can be applied to address this problem is chest physiotherapy. General Objective: To determine the application of chest physiotherapy in COPD patients with the nursing problem of ineffective airway clearance in the Emergency Department of RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto. Methods: This study used a case study design with a nursing care approach in COPD patients. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. The interventions included chest physiotherapy techniques such as percussion, vibration, and postural drainage, which were performed regularly according to the patient’s condition. Results of Nursing Care: The results showed that the application of chest physiotherapy was effective in facilitating secretion removal, reducing respiratory rate, relieving dyspnea, and improving the patient’s breathing pattern. Additionally, there was an improvement in effective coughing ability and breath sounds after the intervention. Recommendation: It is expected that future research can be developed using broader methods, such as quantitative or experimental studies with larger sample sizes, in order to strengthen the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of chest physiotherapy in COPD patients.
