Abstract

Background: Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five, as it can lead to severe complications and even death if not properly managed. Mothers, as the primary caregivers, play an essential role in preventing pneumonia by recognizing early symptoms and initiating appropriate care. However, inadequate maternal knowledge regarding pneumonia is still commonly found in many communities. Therefore, accessible, engaging, and effective health education media are needed to improve mothers’ understanding. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of the snakes and ladders game as an educational medium on the knowledge level of mothers of under-five children about pneumonia in Nusawungu Village. Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental one group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 75 mothers of toddlers in Nusawungu Village who were selected through random sampling. Data were collected using a pneumonia knowledge questionnaire, with a snake and ladder game as the intervention. Results: The results showed an improvement in mothers’ knowledge after the snake and ladder game intervention, as indicated by an increase in the mean pretest and posttest scores. Statistical analysis revealed a p-value < 0.001, indicating a significant effect of the snake and ladder game on mothers’ knowledge about pneumonia. Conclusion: This study concludes that the snake and ladder game can be used as an educational medium to improve mothers’ knowledge about pneumonia
