Abstract

Background: Hospitalization in children can lead to various psychological impacts, one of which is anxiety caused by an unfamiliar hospital environment, fear-inducing medical procedures, and separation from parents. Anxiety that is not properly managed can affect the healing process, increase stress, and reduce children’s cooperation during treatment. One non-pharmacological nursing intervention that can be used to reduce anxiety in children is medical play therapy. Objective: To describe the implementation of nursing care in children with nursing problems of anxiety due to hospitalization through the provision of medical play therapy. Methods: This study used a descriptive method with a case study approach. The subjects consisted of five preschool-aged children (2–6 years) experiencing moderate anxiety and undergoing treatment in the inpatient ward of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Children’s anxiety levels were measured using the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS) preschool version before and after the implementation of medical play therapy. Results: The assessment results of five children showed a decrease in SCAS scores in all patients after receiving medical play therapy gradually during the hospitalization period. Children appeared calmer, more cooperative, more willing to interact with nurses, and better able to accept nursing procedures with more adaptive responses. Anxiety reduction occurred more rapidly in children who received optimal parental support and had previous hospitalization experience. Recommendation: Further studies are needed to examine the effectiveness of medical play therapy in reducing anxiety in children due to hospitalization.
