Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a chronic condition characterized by increased blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg, which often causes acute pain such as headaches and neck pain. Unmanaged pain can interfere with daily activities and reduce patients’ quality of life. Pain management can be performed through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, one of which is the Benson relaxation technique. Objective: To analyze the nursing care process, including assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, and to determine the effectiveness of the Benson relaxation technique in reducing acute pain in hypertension patients at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Hospital. Methods: This study used a descriptive design with a case study approach involving five hypertension patients with acute pain (NRS 4–6). The Benson relaxation intervention was performed for 10–20 minutes, twice daily. Pain intensity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) before and after the intervention. The data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. Results: All patients experienced a decrease in pain intensity from a score of 4–6 (moderate pain) to 2–3 (mild pain), with an average reduction of 2–3 points, indicating clinical effectiveness. Subjectively, patients reported reduced headache intensity, decreased neck tension, and improved comfort. Objectively, patients appeared more relaxed, with calmer facial expressions, improved pulse rate, decreased blood pressure, and better sleep quality. Additionally, patients showed improved ability to perform activities and a better response to therapy. Recommendation: Benson relaxation is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention in reducing acute pain in hypertension patients and can be applied in nursing practice.
