Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible decline in kidney function. Patients with CKD frequently experience ineffective breathing patterns due to fluid retention, pulmonary edema, anemia, and acid-base imbalance. This condition is commonly encountered in the Emergency Department (ED) and requires prompt nursing management. Slow deep breathing therapy and semi-Fowler positioning are non-pharmacological interventions that may improve respiratory status. Objective: To analyze nursing care provided to CKD patients experiencing ineffective breathing patterns through slow deep breathing therapy and semi-Fowler positioning in the Emergency Department of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study design involving five CKD patients with ineffective breathing patterns. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and documentation. Interventions included slow deep breathing exercises and semi-Fowler positioning. Outcomes were evaluated based on respiratory rate, use of accessory muscles, and oxygen saturation. Results: The interventions showed improvement in breathing patterns, indicated by decreased respiratory rate, reduced use of accessory respiratory muscles, and increased oxygen saturation within normal limits. Recommendation: Future research is recommended to include additional variables such as anxiety levels and fatigue levels to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of breathing pattern improvement.
