Abstract
Background: Babies with a low birth weight (BBLR) of <2,500 grams have a high risk of death as well as impaired growth and development. One of the problems that often occurs in BBLR babies is hypothermia due to immaturity of the thermoregulatory system. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an effective intervention through mother-baby skin contact to maintain body temperature stability. Objective: To find out the nursing care of BBLR babies with hypothermia in the Melati Room of Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Hospital. Methods: This case study uses a descriptive method with a case study approach. The study subjects consisted of 5 BBLR babies with hypothermia. Data was collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. The intervention provided was KMC for 3 days with monitoring body temperature before and after the action. Results: All infants experienced an increase in body temperature after the KMC intervention. The initial temperature was in the hypothermia (<36.5°C) and increased to the normal range (36.5–36.8°C). The temperature rise ranged from 0.4– 1.1°C and occurred consistently in all respondents, accompanied by a more stable condition of the baby. Conclusion: KMC is effective in increasing and maintaining the body temperature of BBLR babies who experience hypothermia, so it can be used as a nonpharmacological intervention. Recommendation: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is recommended as a nursing measure to maintain body temperature stability and prevent hypothermia in BBLR babies.
