Abstract

Background: Preterm infants require specialized care to maintain body temperature stability, adequate nutrition, and optimal growth. A lack of knowledge among postpartum mothers regarding preterm infant care and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) may affect their readiness to care for their babies independently. Health education is one of the nursing interventions that can improve mothers’ understanding and confidence. Methods: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of health education in improving postpartum mothers’ knowledge regarding preterm infant care and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). Results: This study used a case study design involving five respondents, namely postpartum mothers with preterm infants at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. The intervention was conducted over 3 × 24 hours through structured education using a booklet and direct demonstration of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). Knowledge was measured using a pre-test before the education session and a post-test afterward, along with observation based on Nursing Outcome Standards (SLKI) indicators related to knowledge level. Conclusions: Structured health education effectively improved postpartum mothers’ knowledge and readiness to care for preterm infants. Recommendation: It is recommended to develop more varied educational media, such as videos or digital modules, to further enhance health literacy among mothers of preterm infants.
