Abstract

Background: Laparotomy is a major surgical procedure that involves incisions in the layers of the abdominal wall. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that arises from tissue damage. One non-pharmacological therapy that can be used to manage pain is aromatherapy. Lemon aromatherapy is commonly used to treat pain and anxiety. Research purposes: Describe the results of nursing care for acute pain in post-laparotomy surgery patients at, Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Hospital. Research methods: This research used a descriptive method with a case study approach. The sample consisted of five post-laparotomy patients. The case study instrument used a standard operating procedure (SOP) for administering lemon aromatherapy and observation sheets before and after administration. Research result: The results of the application to five patients, all of whom were experiencing acute pain nursing issues, were given lemon aromatherapy for 10 minutes. After the intervention, measurements were taken using an observation sheet. Observations were made before and after the lemon aromatherapy was administered. After the application of the therapy to the five patients, results showed a decrease in pain scale. Conclusion: The results of the application of innovative lemon aromatherapy nursing actions showed that there was a decrease in grimacing, protective and anxious attitudes. Recommendation: The results of this study can be applied to post-laparotomy patients to reduce acute pain.
