Abstract

Background: Diarrhea is defined as having more than three bowel movements a day with a watery consistency, without mucus or blood. Anxiety is a response to a specific threatening situation and is a normal occurrence accompanying development, change, new or unfamiliar experiences, as well as the process of discovering one’s identity and the meaning of life. If not addressed promptly, this condition can increase the risk of serious complications that may be life-threatening. One nursing intervention that can help manage anxiety in children with diarrhea is coloring therapy. General Objective: Analyzing nursing care for children with diarrhea and anxiety-related nursing issues through coloring therapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: The design of this case study is descriptive, employing a case study method with a 5-step nursing process approach applied to 5 clients with diarrhea. The play therapy method involving coloring pictures was conducted over 3 days, once daily, with each session lasting 30 minutes. The instruments used included a nursing care plan, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Play Therapy Using Coloring Pictures, crayons, picture books, ballpoint pens, the mYPAS anxiety score assessment, and an observation sheet. Results: The assessment results revealed that 5 respondents experienced reduced crying when new people arrived, as well as anxiety, restlessness, and panic. The nursing issue identified was anxiety. The nursing intervention implemented was focused relaxation therapy to reduce anxiety levels using coloring techniques. The nursing intervention was implemented over 3 days in 3 sessions. The nursing evaluation showed a reduction in anxiety levels, measured using the Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS), with a final average score of 23.66—indicating no anxiety (<30)—and demonstrating calm and cooperative behavior. Recommendation:This study shows that coloring therapy can reduce anxiety levels in children.
