Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) remain a major pediatric health issue, with ARI being the leading cause of mortality among under-fives. Children presenting ARI symptoms often experience compromised sleep quality, which in turn hinders their growth and development. Non-pharmacological interventions that have been shown to improve sleep quality include a combination of ‘common cold’ massage and lavender oil. Objective: To find out the sleep quality of toddlers with ARI before and after intervention, and to evaluate the effect of combining ‘common cold’ massage with lavender oil on their sleep quality. Methods: This study employed a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design. Total sampling was used, including all eligible toddlers diagnosed with ARI who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria (n = 20). Sleep quality was measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ), which has a validity range of 0.41–0.88 and a reliability coefficient of 0.82. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Prior to the intervention, 19 toddlers (95%) exhibited mild sleep problems, while one toddler (5%) showed no sleep disturbances. Following the intervention, 18 toddlers (90%) demonstrated no sleep problems, and 2 toddlers (10%) continued to have mild sleep issues. The Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of p = 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating rejection of the null hypothesis and confirming a significant effect of the intervention. Conclusion: The combination of ‘common cold’ massage and lavender oil significantly improved sleep quality in 95% of toddlers with ARI. Recommendations for Future Researchers: Future research should consider expanding respondent categories and experimenting with various essential oil combinations.
