Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease that is common in the elderly and requires regular long-term treatment. Compliance with antihypertensive medication use is influenced by the patient's level of knowledge, which is related to sociodemographic factors. This study aims to determine the relationship between sociodemographic factors and knowledge and compliance with antihypertensive medication use among the elderly in Kalipucang, Bangunjiwo, Kasihan, Bantul. This study used a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population and sample were all 55 elderly patients with hypertension, using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) adherence questionnaire. Chi-square test results showed no significant association between sociodemographic factors and knowledge and adherence to antihypertensive medication use. In conclusion, improving knowledge among the elderly plays a significant role in improving adherence to antihypertensive medication use.
