Abstract

Background: The preschool developmental stage (ages 3–6) is a critical period for children to achieve maturity in elimination functions. However, toilet training failure frequently occurs due to a lack of technical understanding and inappropriate parental attitudes. Data from the Household Health Survey (SKRT) indicates a 60% failure rate in toileting among children aged 4–5. This condition contributes to bathroom phobia in 30% of 3-year-olds, which, if left unaddressed, hinders the child's independence. Objective: This study aims to analyze family nursing care in the preschool developmental stage, focusing on the diagnosis of Ineffective Family Health Management in Banjarsari Village, Ambal. Methods: This research employed a descriptive design with a case study approach. The subjects consisted of five families with preschool-aged children in Banjarsari Village, selected through specific inclusion and exclusion criteria via observation and interviews. Results: Initial assessments revealed that the five fostered families had not optimally facilitated their children's toilet training needs, leading to the diagnosis of Ineffective Family Health Management. The nursing intervention provided was health education utilizing videos and leaflets, conducted over three sessions within two weeks. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in maternal knowledge; the average pre-test score of 65.2% (fair category) improved to 76.2% (good category) in the post-test. Descriptively, there was an average understanding increase of 11%, covering concept mastery, signs of readiness, and procedures for elimination training. Conclusion: Providing toilet training education is effective in increasing maternal knowledge and supporting readiness as well as elimination independence in children during the preschool developmental stage.
