Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a degenerative disease commonly experienced by the elderly and may cause acute pain and limitations in physical mobility. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (2024), the proportion of elderly people in Indonesia reached 12% of the total population. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (2023) reported that approximately 34% of Indonesians aged 30–79 years suffer from hypertension, and only 9% have controlled blood pressure. One of the non-pharmacological interventions that can help reduce blood pressure and pain is foot massage therapy. Objective: To describe the implementation of gerontic nursing care in elderly patients with hypertension and acute pain problems through foot massage therapy to help reduce blood pressure and improve physical mobility. Methods: This study used a case study design involving five elderly patients with grade 1–2 hypertension who experienced acute pain. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation. The intervention in the form of foot massage therapy was carried out for 15–20 minutes in each session for three consecutive days. Evaluation was conducted using blood pressure measurements, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain assessment, and observation of the patients’ physical mobility. Results: The results showed a decrease in average blood pressure from 156/94 mmHg to 145/88 mmHg and a reduction in pain scale scores from 3–4 to 1 after the implementation of foot massage therapy. Patients appeared more relaxed, comfortable, and experienced improvements in activity and physical mobility. Conclusion: Foot massage therapy is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention in helping to reduce blood pressure, relieve acute pain, and improve physical mobility in elderly patients with hypertension
