Abstract
Background: An unpleasant procedure that causes pain is the reason for the difficulty of the child interaction, inhibiting the treatment and care process. Injection medical procedure is one procedure that causes anxiety. Growth disruption and rejection of treatment become an impact due to children anxiety. Overcoming anxiety can be done by hugging therapy with the aim of immobilizing the extremities of the children during the procedure, providing a sense of security and pleasure for them, providing comfort through direct contact with parents, providing positive assistance, sitting position holding on hugging to create a sense of control so that the injection procedure can finish well. Objective: the present case study describes the results of the hugging therapy to reduce toddlers’ anxiety during injection procedure at hospital. Method: The descriptive method was used with a case study approach. There were 2 subjects consisting of two toddler children (1-3 years old) who were being hospitalized in Melati room of Doctor Soedirman State Hospital of Kebumen in December 2018. The instrument used a distress measurement scale namely the Children Fear Score (CFS). Results: the mother hugging therapy during injection procedure reduced children anxiety (on scale of 1) indicating mild distress or mild stress. Conclusion: The hugging therapy was proven effective therapy to reduce toddlers’ anxiety during injection procedure.
