Abstract
Background. Human Immunodeficiency Virus is virus that attack the immune system. Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syindrome is a set of symptomes caused by the declining of the human immune system caused by HIV. Antiretroviral therapy is a treatment given to patients with HIV/ AIDS to be taken for their whole life. Patients with HIV/ AIDS who need antiretroviral therapy continuesly will have psychological changes. Objective. The objective of this study is to determine the psychological impact of antiretroviral therapy for patients with HIV/ AIDS. Methods. This is a qualitative research using phenomenological approach. Number of informants are 4 people. The sampling technique is “snowball sampling technique“. The data collecting techniques are in-depth interviews and observation. Results. Psychological impact of antiretroviral therapy for patients with HIV/ AIDS found four main discussed themes; being afraid of side effects resulted by whole life therapy, anxiety caused by HIV/AIDS which they thought would never can be cured, stress of having to undergo a life-long antiretroviral therapy and resigned due to their condition and give all to the Lord. Conclutions. Psychological impact of antiretroviral therapy for patients with HIV/ AIDS in VCT Clinic Kebumen General Hospital include: fear, anxiety, stress and resigned.
