Abstract
Introduction, Dental caries is one of the health problems caused by various microorganisms, one of which is Streptococcus mutans. Streptococcus mutans are gram-positive bacteria that live in the oral cavity. Streptococcus mutans can synthesize polysaccharides such as dextran or levans from sucrose which play an important role in the formation of dental caries. One of the plants that has potential as an antibacterial is ganitri leaf. Purpose, the purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity and difference in inhibition of ethanol, methanol, and aquades extracts from ganitri leaf (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) against Streptococcus mutans. Method, This research was carried out by extracting ganitri leaves with 70% ethanol solvent, 70% methanol, and aquades with maceration method. And then the extract obtained was made into a series of concentrations of 10; 20; 30; 40; 50; and 100%. Testing antibacterial activity using the diffusion method. Result, the results showed that the ganitri leaf extract contained active compounds in the form of phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, triterpenoids, and glycosides and had antibacterial activity characterized by the presence of inhibited zones formed. Inhibition zone diameters different significantly between ethanol, methanol and aquades extracts. Ethanol extract has the greatest antibacterial activity in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans bacteria at a concentration of 100% with 19.79 mm ± 2.25 inhibition zones. Conclusion, ethanol, methanol and aquades extract from ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaf have antibacterial activity with maximum inhibition against Streptococcus mutans bacteria and there are significant differences between extracts and concentrations of one another. Recommendation, further research needs to be done with different solvents and bacteria.
