Abstract

Background : Diarrhea is a disease characterized by defecate more than three times a day with a concentration of liquid stool, can be accompanied by blood and mucus. Virgin Coconut Oil is an oil that can work as an antibacterial. Aims : This study aims to determine the presence of antibacterial activity on VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) against Shigella flexneri. Method : Making VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) is done by fermentation method using fermipan. VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) was tested against Shigella flexneri using the paper disc method. This study used five concentration treatments namely 12.5;25;50;75;100%, tween 80 as a negative control and ciproloxacin as a positive control. Results : Based on the ANOVA test results, showed the influence of antibacterial activity on Shigella flexneri with a significance value (p<0,05). This shows that there are significant differences in the use of various concentrations of VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) in inhibiting the growth of Shigella flexneri bacteria. The 50% VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) concentration is the best concentration in the inhibition zone with an average inhibition zone value of 12,43 mm. Conclusion : The antibacterial activity test shows that VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) extracted using the fermentation method has the potential as an antibacterial.
